The Soap Lady
On display since 1874, the “Soap Lady” was a heavyset woman who died sometime in the 19th century from yellow fever. Her body underwent a process of saponification, where chemicals in the soil reacted to the fats in her body, producing a sort of soap-like substance.

stophatingyourbody:

Hi lovelies! This is a video called ‘Killing Us Softly’ by Jean Kilbourne (part two is right here) about the message that media and advertising sends to us as a society. It talks about the image of perfection that can never be reached, the exploitation and devaluing of women, and the horrible, horrible price that we as individuals pay when we internalize the messages that advertisements send to us.

I cannot stress strongly enough how important videos like this are, how important it is to think critically about the things you’re being told to do, to act like, and to be by the media.

The most important thing to remember is that you and I, as the consumers, are the ones who have to protest this. We need to speak up if we feel it’s wrong. We need to be activists, we need to question and make it known that this is not okay. If we sit back and stay silent, it’s never going to change. And that’s exactly what blogs like Stop Hating Your Body are doing.

I hope this video does for you what it did for me!

Love,

Amber
